Answers to "Where are my snagged items?" and other Snag Bar Questions (updated 4/30/11)

by Alan Attebery - Apr 20, 2010 Star_s94,779 views

NOTE (updated on 5/9/11 @ 11:07 AM): Admin have implemented a fix for your game feeds. Your “My Feed” pages should now show an extended feed for all games! They are still working to update the snag bar so that it reads old game feeds as well.

NOTE (updated on 5/7/11 @ 3:10 PM): Facebook is currently experiencing an issue that is preventing the Gamers Unite! Snag Bar from being able to properly read your Game Stories Feed or News Feed. This problem is also affecting the Gamers Unite! My Feed pages for most games. We have submitted a bug report to Facebook and are hoping they will be able to diagnose the problem and fix it soon. In the meantime, we are attempting to figure out a way to work around this bug and get the Snag Bar and My Feed pages working again. We will update this notice when more information is available.

A LOT of questions have been asked about the Snag Bar and how it works. We have taken many, if not most, of the most frequently asked questions and put them here in this thread. In addition to this thread, you may find additional help in the Gamers Unite! and Snag Bar FAQ thread.

Before posting a Snag Bar question in this thread, please read through the ENTIRE post below to see if an answer has already been provided. Asking a question already on this page may result in your question being ignored. In addition, make sure to read the VERY LAST SECTION of the post about what information you need to leave us about your problem. Without this information, we may not be able to help you and your post may go ignored.

----------

    <!-- Question 1 -->
  1. What is the Snag Bar?

    The Snag Bar is a tool that automates the process of clicking on reward posts for specific Facebook games. So instead of having to manually click on every reward post that hits your feed, the Snag Bar will automatically do it for you.

  2. <!-- Question 2 -->

  3. How does the Snag Bar work?

    The Snag Bar scans your Facebook News Feed or Game Stories Feed for appropriate reward posts. When it finds one, it will click the link in the post. It then tries to determine if it was successful in snagging the item by reading the linked page.

    If the Snag Bar was successful in snagging the item, or is unsure if it was successful, it will display the item on the Snagged Items page. If it was unsuccessful, it does not display anything.

    Once activated, the Snag Bar will scan your News Feed or Game Stories Feed every 60 seconds for new reward posts. This will continue until you hit the "Stop" button on the Snag Bar or you have reached the limit set on your Tollbar Preferences page.

  4. <!-- Question 3 -->

  5. Which games does the Snag Bark work with?

    The Snag Bar currently looks for reward posts in the following games:

    Cafe World, CityVille, FarmVille, and FrontierVille

    Other games may be added to the Snag Bar in the future.

  6. <!-- Question 4 -->

  7. Which browsers do the Snag Bar work with? Will it be released for other browsers in the future?

    Windows PC: Firefox and Internet Explorer
    Macintosh: Firefox

    The platfrom program that we have used to build the Snag Bar does not currently support any other browsers. As such, additional browser support is not up to us. Until they add support for other browsers, we are unable to add support for other browsers.

  8. <!-- Question 5 -->

  9. Do I have to invite my friends to join this site in order to use the Snag Bar?

    Not if you don't want to. The Snag Bar requires nothing more than installation onto your computer and permission to access your Facebook profile and feeds.

  10. <!-- Question 6 -->

  11. Can I control what items I snag?

    Yes. Open the Toolbar Preferences page by clicking the "sprocket" icon on the toolbar to access all of the Snag Bar controls.

    You can turn snagging for a game on or off by checking/unchecking the "Game to Snag" box next to the appropriate game. You can also fine tune what items in a game you snag by clicking the game's "select items" link.

    In addition, you can control how many items for a game the Snag Bar snags during each session (a new session starts everytime you start the Snag Bar) by adjusting the number found in the "Stop Snagging After" box for your games.

    By default, all games and all items in a game are selected when you install the Snag Bar or when new items are added. In addition, all games are set to 125 items per session.

  12. <!-- Question 7 -->

  13. Where are my snagged items? I don't see them in my Gift Box!

    When you snag an item, whether manually or with the Snag Bar, the game will automatically route the item to the appropriate box, counter, feature, etc. within the game. There is nothing else you have to do.

    There will be times, however, when the items you thought you snagged (again, whether manually or with the Snag Bar) don't end up in the appropriate game. Gamers Unite! has no control over any of the following items, nor can we recover any items lost as a result.

    • NON GIFT BOX ITEMS: Some snagged items may not go to your game's Gift Box. Instead, they may get routed to a different place in the game. In FarmVille, for example, coins automatically go to the Coin Bank and bushels automatically go to the Farmer's Market. What goes where is dependent on the game you are playing and can change from time to time.
    • GIFT BOX LIMIT: The Gift Box in each game may have a limit on how many items it can hold. When your Gift Box has hit this limit, the game may reject any additional items you try to add to it.
    • SNAG BAR IS UNSURE IF IT WAS SUCCESSFUL: Sometimes, the Snag Bar is unable to tell if it was successful in snagging an item for you. This may be because a reward item links directly into the game instead of the usual "successful"/"failed" page that comes up for most links. Or it may be because Facebook or the game fails to properly process the click and/or return the information needed. Although the Snag Bar will still display such items on the Snagged Items page, the wording in the pop-up should indicate that the bar isn't sure. If the Snag Bar was not successful, then the item won't be in your game.
    • GAME GLITCHES: From time to time, or almost every day in the case of some Facebook games, glitches will occur that will affect game play. Sometimes, such glitches will result in successfully snagged items never making it into the game or, worse yet, becoming lost once in the game. Such glitches will usually affect a large group of players at the same time, though there are times when these glitches will affect only a small number of players.

    <!-- Question 8 -->

  14. What are those numbers on the Snag Bar? How do I reset them?

    Your Snag Bar has two numbers on it, though only one number is displayed at any time.

    The white number encased in a red box is the Current Session Snag Count. It will tell you how many items you've snagged for the current session only (since you hit the Start button). This number will automatically reset to zero every time you restart your Snag Bar. You can manually reset this number by clicking the "Clear Log" button on the Snagged Items page.

    The black number with a gray background is your Lifetime Snag Count. It will tell you how many items you've snagged since you installed the counter or last reset it. To reset this counter, go to your Toolbar Preferences page and click the "Reset Count" link near the bottom of the page.

    <!-- Question 9 -->

  15. Why isn't my Snag Bar snagging anything?

    If your Snagged Items or Toolbar Preferences page is grayed out and you have a "Give the Snag Bar Permissions" or "Checking Status" pop-up that won't go away, please see Question 11 below.

    Clicking the "Reload Toolbar" button on the Snag Bar will fix many Snag Bar problems. So before you do anything else on this list, please stop the Snag Bar, click the "Reload Toolbar" button, then restart the Snag Bar. If that doesn't fix it, then read on.

    • Snagged Items Page Empty: When this happens, the Snag Bar is snagging items but Facebook didn't properly make all the connections we need to tell what has been snagged. If this occurs, stop the Snag Bar, close the Snagged Items page, then start the Snag Bar again. If it continues to happen, click the "Reload Toolbar" button on the Snag Bar. If that doesn't fix it, then the Gamers Unite! Application may have become corrupted and needs to be reinstalled (see Question 14 for instructions).
    • Facebook/Game Changes: From time to time, either Facebook or one of the games will change how things work. These changes can happen quickly and without warning, and may prevent the Snag Bar from working with that game. Once we know about a change, we will modify the Snag Bar to work with the change. Such changes may or may not result in a new version being issued. Either way, it can take a few days before every Snag Bar has been updated with the newest changes/version. To ensure you have the latest Snag Bar changes/version, click the "Reload Toolbar" button on the Snag Bar.
    • Snag Bar Collection Limits: The Snag Bar will only snag a specific number of items for a game per session (a new session starts everytime you start the Snag Bar). Once you hit this limit, the Snag Bar will not attempt to snag any more items for that game until you start a new session. See Question 6 above for information on changing these limits.
    • Daily Game Limits: Some games have built limits into their game that can affect how many items you can snag. FrontierVille, for example, has put individual limits on some of their items. FarmVille, on the other hand, limits the total number of items you can collect each day. Once you have reached these limits for the day, neither you nor the Snag Bar will be able to snag those items.
    • No Reward Posts (different feed): Reward posts can show up in either your Game Stories Feed or your News Feed, though most gamers will see reward posts only in their Game Stories Feed. By default, the Snag Bar is set to check your Games Stories feed. You can toggle which feed the bar checks. Open the Toolbar Preferences page and check (if posts are on your Game Stories Feed) or uncheck (if posts are on your News Feed) the box at the bottom of the page under "Switch how the toolbar gets the game feed" heading.
    • No Reward Posts (hidden posts): If you don't see ANY reward posts on your feed BUT you are able to open your game, you may have accidentally hidden the posts. Go to your News Feed, click the "Top News" link (if not already selected), scroll to the bottom of the page, and click the "Edit Options" link. In the pop-up box, click the "x" to the right of the game you have hidden.
    • No Reward Posts (blocked game): If you don't see ANY reward posts on your feed AND you are unable to open your game, you may have accidentally blocked the game. From any Facebook page, click on Account --> Privacy Settings. Under the "Block Lists" header, click on the "Edit your lists" link. In the "Blocked Applications" section, search for your game (NOT in alphabetical order) and click the "unblock" link next it.
    • Few Reward Posts: Check to see how many reward posts for your game there are on your feed. If there are only a few posts, then other people likely collected the reward first. Few reward posts could simply mean that your neighbors aren't playing the game right now, or could be a sign that you need more neighbors. Too add more neighbors, visit the "Add Me" page for your game (the tab can be found at the top of every Gamers Unite! thread for every game).

    • Toolbar Preferences: Click on the Toolbar Preferences icon on your Snag Bar (the sprocket looking icon) and make sure the box for the game you want to snag is checked. Then click on the "select items" link for that game and make sure that the items and/or categories (if available) you want to snag are checked.
    • Two Internet Explorer Windows Open: There is a bug in Internet Explorer that prevents toolbars from syncing up with each other when two or more windows are open. Notice that I am saying windows, and not tabs. When this bug acts up, the other window(s) can keep the Snag Bar from starting. If this happens, you will need to close the extra window(s) and then (stop and) start the Snag Bar again.
    • Facebook/Game Glitches: If you have spent any time playing any Facebook game, then you know that Facebook and the games have issues. They glitch, time-out, and at times just flat out quit working. If you can't get on Facebook or open your game, or if it is taking a really long time to do something on Facebook or in your game, then the Snag Bar is likely having the same problem.
    • Gamers Unite! Application Corrupted: It is not uncommon for something to happen inside Facebook that will cause applications to become corrupted, and there is no easy way to tell when this has happened. If nothing else on this page has helped, then you should uninstall/reinstall the GU! Application (see Question 14 for instructions).
    • Snag Bar Corrupted: It is not uncommon for Facebook, your browser, or your computer to do something that will cause the Snag Bar to break, and there is no easy way to tell when this has happened. If nothing else on this page has helped, then click the "Reload Toolbar" button on the Snag Bar. If that doesn't fix your problem, then you should uninstall/reinstall the Snag Bar (see Question 15 for instructions).

    <!-- Question 10 -->

  16. What happened to my Snag Bar?

    Clicking the "Reload Toolbar" button on the Snag Bar will fix many Snag Bar problems (assuming the button and/or Snag Bar is visible). So before you do anything else on this list, please stop the Snag Bar, click the "Reload Toolbar" button, then restart the Snag Bar. If that doesn't fix it, then read on.

    • If the Snag Bar has strangely morphed into a MySpace Bar, go to http://gamersunite.coolchaser.com/toolbar/change_layout and click the "Activate Gamers Unite! Snag Bar" button.
    • If part of the Snag Bar has disappeared, click on the "G" (or "C") logo on the far left of the bar and choose the "Layout Manager" option. In the pop-up box, click the "Restore defaults" button.
    • If you see two separate Snag Bars in your browser, or you have two Snag Bars listed in your browser's Add-Ons section, click the "Reload Toolbar" button on the Snag Bar. If this doesn't fix the problem, please visit the Troubleshooting: Make sure you don't have two Snag Bars installed thread for more information.
    • If the entire Snag Bar has disappeared completely, check to see if you have accidentally hidden it. If you are using Firefox, click View --> Toolbars --> and see if the Gamers Unite! (or CoolChaser) Snag Bar is checked (click it if it is not). If you are using Internet Explorer, click Tools --> Toolbars --> and see if the Gamers Unite! (or CoolChaser) Snag Bar is checked (click it if it is not).
    • If the entire Snag Bar has disappeared completely AND it is not hidden, check to see if it has become disabled. In Firefox, click Tools --> Add-ons. Find the Gamers Unite! (or CoolChaser) Snag Bar listing and make sure it is enabled. In Internet Explorer, click Tools --> Manage Add-Ons (--> Enable or Disable Add-Ons in IE7). Look to make sure that BOTH the Gamers Unite! (or CoolChaser) Snag Bar AND the Freecause Toolbar BHO are enabled.
    • If the Snag Bar still isn't showing up, then you need to uninstall and reinstall it (see Question 15 for instructions).

    <!-- Question 11 -->

  17. Why does the "Checking for Permissions" / "Checking Status" box keep popping up and/or refuse to go away?

    • Computer Clock: If your computer's clock is not set to the correct date, time, and/or time zone, it could prevent the Snag Bar from working properly. Open your computer's clock and look at all three items to make sure they are set correctly.
    • Changing Tabs / Programs: While you are waiting for GU! to verify Facebook permissions, do not move to another open tab in your browser or to another open program on your computer. Doing so may cause the system not to return the permissions and will cause the box to stay up.
    • Using 2 Different Browsers: Facebook does not allow users to log into the site on two different browsers at the same time. Their programming is supposed to log the first browser out when it detects the second browser accessing the site. This could prevent the Snag Bar from working properly. Either run the Snag Bar on the same browser you are accessing Facebook on, or stop the Snag Bar until you are done accessing Facebook on the other browser.
    • Two Internet Explorer Windows Open: There is a bug in Internet Explorer that prevents toolbars from syncing up with each other when two or more windows are open. Notice that I am saying windows, and not tabs. When this bug acts up, the other windows can keep the Snag Bar from working properly.. If this happens, you will need to close the extra window(s) and then (stop and) start the Snag Bar again.
    • No Continuous Facebook Login: The Snag Bar requires a continuous Facebook login in order to work. If you have unchecked the "Keep me logged in" box on the Facebook login page, you may either need to check this box or keep a Facebook or Gamers Unite! tab open in the browser you are using
    • Website Cookies: If you have to enter your login information every time you go to Facebook despite having the "Keep me logged in" box checked, then you need to tweak your browser's cookies' settings. For Firefox, click Tools --> Options --> Privacy. Make sure the "Accept cookies from sites" and "Accept third-party cookies" boxes are checked and the "Keep until:" option is set to "they expire." For Internet Explorer, click Tools --> Internet Options --> Privacy. Click the "Default" button.
    • Facebook Down: Anyone who has spent any time on Facebook knows that the site will break at some point. Whether it slows to a crawl or won't load at all, it will happen. And when it does, it will prevent the Snag Bar from working properly. There is nothing you or Gamers Unite! can do when this happens.

    <!-- Question 12 -->

  18. Can I use the Snag Bar on multiple Facebook accounts?

    Yes, as long as the Gamers Unite! Application is installed on the Facebook Profile you are logged into.

    To log out of one account and into another, stop the Snag Bar and then close all open Gamers Unite! tabs. In Facebook, log out of the first account and login to the second account. Start the Snag Bar and allow any permission prompts that pop-up.

    If it doesn't seem to sync up to the new account or doesn't scan anything, stop the Snag Bar. Go to the Gamers Unite! website and look in the top right corner. If it shows that you are logged in (doesn't matter if it's the first or second account), click the "Logout of Facebook" link. Go back to Facebook and log out of there as well, if not already logged out. Close all GU! and Facebook tabs. Open a new tab, go to Facebook, and log into the second account. Start the Snag Bar and follow any permission prompts.

  19. <!-- Question 13 -->

  20. Can I disable/move the "you have just snagged an item" pop-up box?

    Although you cannot move the location of this pop-up box, you can disable it. Click the Toolbar Preferences icon on your Snag Bar (the "sprocket" looking icon) and check the box under the "Pop up notification" section.

    NOTE: Even with the pop-up box disabled, you could still occasionally get a pop-up notice. An occasional pop-up may be needed by the Snag Bar in order to keep itself logged into Facebook. This cannot be disabled.

  21. <!-- Question 14 -->

  22. How do I uninstall (and reinstall) the Gamers Unite! Application?

    • To Uninstall:
      • From any Facebook page, click on Accounts --> Privacy Settings
      • Under "Applications and Websites", click "Edit Your Settings" link
      • In "Applications You Use" section, click "Edit Settings" button
      • Find the Gamers Unite! listing; click the "x" button on far right
    • To Reinstall:
      • Go to the Gamers Unite! Website (gamersunite.com)
      • Click the "Facebook Connect" button in the top right corner
      • Allow permission in each pop-up box

    <!-- Question 15 -->

  23. How do I uninstall (and reinstall) the Snag Bar?

    • To Uninstall:
      • Firefox: Go to Tools --> Add Ons, find the Gamers Unite! (or CoolChaser) Snag Bar, click the uninstall button, and restart your browser.

      • Internet Explorer:Go to Control Panel --> Programs and Features, uninstall the Gamers Unite! (or CoolChaser) Snag Bar, and restart your browser (if not already closed).
    • To Reinstall:
      Go to the Gamers Unite! Website (gamersunite.com), click the "Get the Snag Bar" link in the top left corner, click the "Install Toolbar" button, and follow/allow all prompts. Restart your browser (if not already closed).
  24. <!-- Question 16 -->

  25. Nothing has worked. Now what?

    If none of the above tips has helped, then it's possible that more than one thing is wrong and no single step above will solve it. Completing the below steps, IN ORDER, has shown to solve as many as 95% of all Snag Bar problems, whether the problem lies with the Snag Bar itself, with Facebook, or with one of the games. Even if you have tried some of the steps above already, you should complete all steps below, IN ORDER.

    Print the instructions out or copy and paste them into a file before you start.

    • Uninstall all affected applications: Uninstall the Gamers Unite! Application AND all affected game applications (follow the "uninstall" instructions in Question 14 for each application)
    • Uninstall the Snag Bar: Follow the "uninstall" instructions in Question 15
    • Clear Flash Player cache: Go to www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager07.html and select the "Delete all sites" button
    • Clear your browser's cache: Instructions at http://support.zynga.com/CP_ArticleView?Id=kA160000000Gnw2CAC&gameId=0&loc=en_US
    • Reboot your computer
    • Reinstall all affected applications: Reinstall the Gamers Unite! Application AND all affected game applications (follow the "reinstall" instructions in Question 15; for the game applications, use the Facebook search box to find the games; order does not matter)
    • Refresh all affected games: For each game you use the Snag Bar with, allow it to completely load; once fully loaded, hold down the CTRL key and press the F5 button at the same time; once the game fully reloads again, close it
    • Reinstall the Snag Bar: Follow the "reinstall" instructions in Question 15
    • Run the Snag Bar: Open your browser (if not already opened), click the "Snag" button, and follow/allow all pop-ups; when done, click the "Snag" button (it may take up to two minutes for the Snag Bar to kick in first time)

If you have a Snag Bar problem that is not addressed in this thread, or if you have followed the advice given and are still having problems, then please leave a clear, well-written, well-punctuated, and detailed description in the comments below. If we cannot read it, or if you don't include all of the information requested, then your post may be ignored as we may be unable to help you.

Your description should include (at a minimum):

  • Your Operating System and version
  • Your browser name and version number
  • Whether you have had any problems accessing your Facebook Profile
  • If you have recently installed / uninstalled / updated any programs on your computer
  • If the problem occurs on other computers (if applicable)
  • If the problem occurs on other Facebook accounts you or your family has (if applicable)
  • Whether the problem occurs constantly or randomly
  • Which questions in the above post you have already tried (be specific)
  • If anything changed when you applied the solutions to those questions
  • A detailed description of what happens when you click the "Snag" button
  • Any other information that might be relevant to this problem

Please keep in mind that 95% of all Snag Bar problems are NOT site-wide problems. This means that while you, and others, may be experiencing similar issues with your Snag Bar, the GU! Admins and Mods, and most of the rest of the users, are not experiencing any issues. Unless one of the GU! staff is experiencing the exact same issue, then we can only take guesses as to what the problem might be. Your clear, well-written, detailed descriptions of your problems may help us narrow down the issue, whether GU! related or not. But even then, it may not be enough.

When assisting you, we may ask for additional information or ask you to repeat steps you have already completed. This is so we can eliminate the common issues and get a feel for what the problem might be. In addition, we may ask that you screen share with us so we can try to get a better idea what the problem is. Depending on the problem and the solutions we've tried so far, we may ask you to download & install Skype, which will allow us to see exactly what you see but does not allow us to take control of your computer, or Yuuguu, which will allow us to take control of your computer. While we understand that you may be unwilling to provide us with more information, repeat steps you've already done, or screen share with us, please understand we may not be able to provide assistance otherwise.

•If anything changed when you applied the solutions to those questions - no change to my specific problem
•A detailed description of what happens when you click the "Snag" button - items are snagged and counted.
•Any other information that might be relevant to this problem - I generally cannot access the list of snagged items ot if I do manage to I cannot change to the Preferences tab. I occasionally manage to access the Preferences but if I do that it will not then allow access to the Snagged Items tab. Checking the bottom of the screen it seems to hang on an instruction "Read ssl.gstatic.com". If I try to access the Home page of GU it will hang on "Read profile.ak.fbcdn.net"
I am posting this from my IE account which has no problems at all as I cannot access any feature of the GU site in FF at present. It is snagging but I really need to be able to see what is being snagged and to change my preferences. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
